What a blocked drain usually costs
Most standard blockages across the Mornington Peninsula clear for between $150 and $400. If tree roots are involved, or the plumber needs a CCTV camera to find the problem, expect $350 to $900 for the camera inspection and jet blasting together. A collapsed or root-broken pipe that needs relining is a bigger job, usually $3,000 and up. The full cost guide breaks down every scenario.
Why Peninsula drains block
The Mornington Peninsula is built largely on old beach-house stock, and its drains show it. Fibro and weatherboard holiday houses from the 1950s through the 1970s run from Safety Beach down through Dromana, McCrae, Rosebud, Capel Sound, Rye and Blairgowrie, most of them extended at least once with an added bathroom, a bungalow or a laundry hooked into drainage that was never designed for it. The older township cores at Mornington, Sorrento, Hastings and Somerville still run plenty of original clay sewer pipe, and the coastal tea-tree, moonah, cypress and pine that give the Peninsula its character send roots into every open joint they find.
Geography adds the rest. Sandy soil along the bay washes into stormwater pits and settles in the flat runs. Steep blocks at Mount Martha, Mount Eliza, McCrae and Arthurs Seat push water and silt downhill fast. Out through Red Hill, Main Ridge, Merricks, Shoreham and Somers, rural and semi-rural properties often sit on septic or on-site wastewater systems rather than reticulated sewer, which changes what a blockage means and who fixes it.
Then there is the Peninsula pattern nobody else has in quite the same way. A large share of these houses are holiday homes, empty for weeks at a time. The blockage builds quietly, and the owner finds it on a Friday night in January with a car full of family. A licensed drain plumber clears it, then tells you honestly whether it was a one-off or whether the pipe itself needs attention before the next visit.
